One rainy autumn, a traveler got lost in the mountains of Arkansas. He was tired and hungry, and so was his horse. Night was approaching. All at once, he saw a cabin. A squatter sat on the porch fiddling the same tune over and over.

The traveler asked the squatter for food and water for himself and his horse. The squatter replied: "Ain't got a thing in the house."

The traveler asked where the next house was. The squatter said: "Dunno. I ain't never been there."

The frustrated traveler asked if he could spend the night. The squatter replied: "House leaks. My wife and me sleep on the only dry spot."

"Why don't you mend the roof?" asked the traveler.

"Can't mend the roof on a rainy day."

The whole time, the squatter continued to fiddle the same tune, over and over.

The traveler snapped: "Why don't you finish that tune?"

"Can't get the turn of the tune."

The traveler took the fiddle, played the turn of the tune and finished it.

"Stranger," said the squatter, "Grab yerself a chair and set down. Sal, cut a hunk outta that deer and cook it. Son, get the whisky and put the horse in the shed. You jest play away, stranger. Tonight, you can sleep on the dry spot!"

In ultimii trei ani, ornitologii americani au colindat padurile din estul statului Arkansas in cautarea unei rare specii de ciocanitoare.

Ciocanitoarea cu cioc de fildes (Campephillus principalis) a fost listata ca fiind o specie pe cale de disparitie, pentru ca la inceputul secolului XXI sa fie declarata disparuta din natura.
Cu toate acestea, unii ornitologi inca spera ca aceasta ciocanitoare ar supravietui undeva in padurile Big Woods din Arkansas. Pana in prezent, nimeni nu a reusit insa sa aduca o dovada video sau foto cu privire la prezenta ciocanitorii cu cioc de fildes in acest areal.

Ornitologii au investigat circa 83 000 din cei 550 000 de acri ai rezervatiei Big Woods. In acesta padure, canoistul Gene Sparlig a vazut aceasta pasare pe data de 11 Februarie 2004. Mai apoi, inginerul David Luneau a fotografiat o imagine neclara a unei pasari pe care expertii de la Cornell University au identificat-o ca fiind extincta ciocanitoare cu cioc de fildes.
Ornitologul Allan Mueller a declarat ca a vazut un exemplar ala acestei specii trecand in zbor deasupra padurii, undeva in vara anului 2007, dar inainte de a o fotografia, acesta a disparut.

Pana in prezent, au fost cheltuiti 9,6 milioane de dolari in speranta redescoperirii acestei specii. O parte din acesti bani s-au folosit in cercetarea padurilor din Arkansas. Cercetatorii afima ca au fost inregistrate strigate si sunete ale acesteia in mlastinile din Florida.
“Aceasta pasare a fost dintotdeauna o imagine simbol a pasarilor nord-americane. Timp de decade a fascinat sufletele si imaginatia oamenilor, fiind, de fapt, cea mai mare specie de ciocanitoare din lume. Ar fi o bucurie de nedescris sa stim ca supravietuieste si in prezent.”, declara Laurie Fenwood, coordonator in cadrul U.S. Fish and Wildlive Service din Atlanta.
